The exception is in the City of Seattle: The 2021 Washington state codes will be mandatory on March 15, 2024. The effective date for the 2021 Seattle codes is no sooner than July 1, 2024. Applicants may use the 2021 Washington codes before March 15, 2024, if they are accompanied by a code modification request. Between March 15, 2024, and the Seattle code effective date, applicants may use either the 2018 or 2021 Seattle codes without a code modification request. Building permit applications submitted, accepted, and paid for prior to March 15 will be reviewed under the 2018 code.

🆕 What’s changing? The new Washington State Building Code brings several key modifications aimed at enhancing safety, sustainability, and overall construction standards. From innovative design elements to improved structural requirements, this update is poised to shape the future of construction practices in the state. One important update relates to energy use. For newly constructed habitable structures, the new building and energy codes will require additional insulation and other measures to improve energy efficiency. Over time, this will contribute to climate resiliency and, ideally, lower energy costs.

📅 Effective Date: Mark your calendars! The changes will officially come into play on March 15, so it’s crucial for builders, architects, and homeowners alike to familiarize themselves with the updated regulations.
